Ignition Problems? We Solve Them On-Site.
Ignition problems can range from a minor inconvenience to a situation that completely prevents you from driving your vehicle. A key that won't turn, a key stuck in the ignition, or a broken key fragment lodged in the cylinder can all leave you stranded. 770 Locksmith provides comprehensive ignition repair and replacement services throughout Orange County — we come to your location with all the tools needed to diagnose and fix the problem on the spot.
Our licensed automotive locksmiths (Lic# LCO8612) have extensive experience with all types of ignition systems — from basic tumbler cylinders in older vehicles to electronically-linked ignition switches in modern cars. We carry ignition cylinders, extraction tools, and key cutting equipment for all major brands.
Ignition Problems We Fix
Key Won't Turn in Ignition
This is one of the most common ignition complaints. The most frequent causes include a locked steering column (try turning the steering wheel gently while turning the key), a worn ignition cylinder with worn wafers, or a worn key that no longer properly engages the tumblers. We diagnose the cause on-site and either repair the cylinder, rekey it, or replace it as needed.
Key Stuck in Ignition
A key that won't come out of the ignition can be caused by a faulty lock cylinder, a problem with the shift lock mechanism (the car may not recognize it's fully in Park), or a broken retention spring inside the cylinder. We access the cylinder and resolve the issue without damaging your steering column or ignition housing.
Broken Key in Ignition — Extraction
When a key snaps off inside the ignition cylinder, it's easy to panic — but this is a routine job for our locksmiths. We use specialized broken key extraction tools to remove the fragment cleanly without damaging the cylinder. Once the fragment is removed, we cut and program a new key on-site so you're back on the road immediately.
Ignition Cylinder Repair & Rekey
A worn ignition cylinder that accepts keys loosely or intermittently doesn't always need full replacement. We can rekey the cylinder with new wafers, restoring proper key engagement. This is typically more cost-effective than full replacement and provides reliable operation.
Ignition Cylinder Replacement
When the cylinder is beyond repair — cracked housing, severe wear, damage from a theft attempt, or stripped cam — we replace it entirely. We supply OEM-compatible cylinders for most makes and models, program the new cylinder to accept your existing key (or a new key if needed), and test the full system before completing the job.
What NOT to Do With an Ignition Problem
If you're experiencing an ignition issue, avoid these common mistakes that can make the situation worse or more expensive to repair:
- Do not force the key: Forcing a stuck or stiff key can cause it to snap off inside the cylinder.
- Do not use WD-40: WD-40 is a water displacer, not a lock lubricant. It can attract dirt and worsen sticking over time. Use graphite lubricant instead if a lubricant is needed.
- Do not attempt DIY extraction: Improvised tools (tweezers, bobby pins) often push the broken key fragment deeper or damage the cylinder walls. Call a professional.
- Do not attempt a hotwire: Besides being illegal without ownership proof, hotwiring modern vehicles with immobilizers is ineffective and can damage expensive electrical components.
